How BJP gained the edge in the social media battle

The BJP and its prime ministerial candidate seem to be the flavor of the season. Over the last few months, the party’s relentless campaigning on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have paid dividends as they have consistently topped in terms of popularity and favorability. Ironically, even Arvind Kejriwal, a leader who popularized the Twitter wave in politics, seems to have been left behind.

exchange4media takes a look at some of the reasons behind BJP’s great performance online:

First-mover advantage
While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) might probably have been the first party to have a dedicated fan base on social networks and the Indian National Congress (INC) was promoting itself through mass media, the BJP quietly built up its fan base on Twitter and Facebook slowly and steadily. With the Congress apparently not considering the digital space as the best medium to reach out to their target audience, the BJP were the first among political parties to start approaching social media from the perspective of the general elections, and this momentum that they built has been useful in recent months.

Clear social strategy
In fact, the entire digital strategy utilized by Narendra Modi and Co has been incredibly professionally managed. In April, the Indian Express reported how the new BJP strategy was to focus on the PM candidate Narendra Modi on social media. As part of their social media initiatives, the BJP also held workshops on social media and the elections, which were promoted through Samvaad’s Facebook page. “The BJP has worked exactly like how any large business would when it comes to handling its social media,” opined Vang Lian, Head of Analysis, and Simlify360. The Indian Express claims that 400 coordinators and over 1,000 volunteers have been assigned the task of promoting Narendra Modi’s views on social networks.

Proactive contribution by party members
Though Modi is the poster child of BJP’s social media campaign, other important leaders and party co-ordinators have also been highly active on the social media front. Whether it is tweeting their own thoughts or writing blogs and Facebook posts or just mutually amplifying Modi’s posts. Lian credits this to a well co-ordinated IT cell working behind the scene. “They (BJP) reach out to individuals through emails, Twitter, Facebook, etc. They have positioned themselves such that either people hate them or love them, which gives them a lot of visibility. In media, any buzz helps,” he added. In comparison, Congress’ main leadership has been strangely shy about talking on social media. AAP continues to be the most talked about with its leaders taking pains to be active in sharing their thoughts, though there seems to be a lack of any real co-ordination between them.

Catchy hashtags
Remember the virality that #AbkiBaarModi and #GharGharNamo received? The interesting thing was that these hashtags were being used by even people who were neutral. Yes, there were some negative connotations (#AbkiBaarModiKiHaar, being one) that also got publicity, but using hashtags which were catchy and appealed to the creative instincts of people helped give BJP a massive boost in terms of buzz generated.

“BJP seems to have a strategy that involves many people and different types of content that they are posting all the time,” said Sanjay Mehta, Co-CEO of Social Wavelength. He further added that the extensive enthusiasm being show by supporters could also be a double-edged sword. “Many of the parties’ fans are also jumping into the bandwagon without much thought and doing what they think is best for their favorite party. Most times, they are over-enthusiastic and not always on the right track, which also gives the party that they are supporting a bad name, in consequence,” he remarked.

200 million urban youth are online

It is estimated that India has near about 200 million online population comprised of youth living in urban areas. Social media touched the youth power and made this Platform a very important part of the entire election process.

The BJP will again use social media platform to attract the youth voters. Experts believe that if demographic support to the different political parties is analyzed then the BJP has more support from the young voters. Arvind Gupta, head of BJP’s IT division and a person behind the party’s social media campaign, said that social media affected 30-40% of the total seats in general elections. It will increase upto 60% by the 2019 general elections.

The BJP had a very strong base policies and strategies for social media. The party increased the overall impact of social media by combining the different platforms and then linking all of these. PM Modi’s Google Hangouts were linked with Twitter Hashtags and Facebook pages. Maximum engagements helped the party to define future strategies.

Ruling Congress defeated

In Maharashtra, The ruling Congress party was defeated. Congress were in power for 10 years. Sole and whole responsible person for this Miracle was Narendra Modi. For the first time in India social media was used so largely during elections. The study shows that NaMo is the most popular and active personality on twitter. Twitter including all other popular social networking sites. The news channels and media ‘exit polls became the main element for success of Narendra Modi and BJP.

The other reality is interesting. About 50% of voters in 2014 were below the age of 35. Almost 40% of them were from the urban areas. Today’s youth, whether living in urban or rural, spending most of their time online. That’s why 2014 assembly elections saw the rush. It was by the regional political parties of Maharashtra to build up a social media presence.

Facebook

On Facebook, BJP’s communication covers an array of things from proposing models of development in India to demystifying the fake claims of growth and boom under the reigning UPA Government. The posts also include tributes to legends, greetings on several occasions, live coverage of events, infographics of the next rally/campaign, and videos of prominent leaders like Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj.

Apart from this, the party also employs Facebook ads with targeted demographics to increase the number of fans and overall reach of messaging. To engage with the existing fans, the party resorts to several contests and campaigns like, Mere Sapnon ka Bharat, where the users are supposed to record and upload their vision for India and the best entries stand a chance to meet Narendra Modi in person.

The party also conducts Yuva Quiz on a timely basis to interact with fans on Facebook.

Besides this, the party also seeks donations from fans on Facebook, asking them to contribute for Change. The #Modi4PM Fund app for donation is hosted simultaneously on the official website as well on the Facebook page. Similar posts and graphics are run as ads on Facebook and Google Display networks.

BJP & Modi Continue to Rule Facebook

Narendra Modi is way ahead of Rahul Gandhi and BJP is also much ahead of Congress on Facebook. In India Facebook’s user base is almost 7 times the number of Twitter users. Thus, Facebook’s outreach is greater.

Twitter

BJP has dominated the Twitter space for quite some time now; the party trends on Twitter almost every day with either BJP or NaMo in XYZ City. Thousands of tweets are posted everyday with #Namo #BJP #NaMo4PM and so on. The tone and the theme of communication remains the same as that of Facebook but with more contributors and associates

Here the party runs a live commentary of events as they happen along with posts spreading awareness about voting in elections, complementing offline events, seeking donations, sharing greetings, exhibiting growth facts, membership calls, quotes from prominent leaders, retweets from leaders, members, volunteers and third party information sources.

As Twitter is all about real time conversation, the party ensures that a human touch is evident in all forms of messaging. Even the pictures shared are targeted to tickle the emotional instinct of the viewers.

Youtube

The Youtube channel for the party was started in 2010 houses a collection of 5000+ videos. The channel has 44,685 subscribers, with 62 million views registered till date, which is a huge number.

There is a mix of videos which are shared on the Youtube channel. Some are focused on occasions like Womens’ Day and Voters’ Registration Day, while there are videos of press conferences from distinguished speakers, speeches from Shri Narendra Modi, question and answer sessions with prominent leaders, coverage’s of several events, and calls for donation, videos clarifying the party’s stand over issues of national importance.

The cover picture on Youtube also carries a loud and clear message for subscribers to Vote for BJP and gives them an option to connect using their preferred social network. By posting all the press conferences, events coverage and dialogues with visionary leaders the party not only surpasses main stream media but also delivers a timely dose of engaging content to the subscribers keeping them glued to the channel.

In terms of engagement levels on Youtube, BJP leads all the way. The gap in lead has multiple factors attached to it. The prime reason is that BJP4India is the only channel, other Narendra Modi’s official channel, for communication, so all the synergies are converged towards a single focal point.

The party has managed to deliver content which mesmerizes the viewer, be it Narendra Modi’s speeches or the call for women empowerment video, or the Modi aane wala hai video song. The videos posted connect with the masses on account of emotional appeal.

The official website for Bharatiya Janta Party collates all the information scattered over the internet on one single platform. The website contains vital information about the party, the core issues the party is focusing on and events calendar for keeping the users updated with the happenings.

The website has an excellent resource inventory for media, voters and volunteers in the form of Mission India 272+. The website houses blogs from Shri Lal Krishna Advani which, otherwise, is not promoted in any of the social media endeavors.

Social Media Plays a Bigger Role in 2019 Polls

According to Statista, in 2019, internet users in India are expected to reach 407 million. About 65 percent of India’s population is within the age group 18-35. This age group spends almost 4 hours in a day on the internet. Political parties are therefore targeting this group of voters for mobilization, as most of them use Twitter / Facebook to consume news. Mobile internet rates plunged by 93 percent while data usage per user surged by over 25 times in three years to 2017 as per the Department of Telecom’s data. This is driving internet growth.

Interim Budget 2019/ Budget 2019

The Interim Budget contains a detailed document of every expense to be incurred and every income earned through taxes in the coming months until the new government comes to power. During the period, the ruling government needs the Parliament’s approval to extract money from the Consolidated Fund of India (CFI), where the government puts all its revenue.
When the election is around the corner, it is impossible for the ruling government to launch a regular Annual Budget. So they passed an Interim Budget, consisting of full estimates of the revenue and expenditure.
When is an interim budget presented?
The ruling government presents an interim budget if it does not have the time to present a full Budget or because Lok Sabha elections may be near. In the latter situation, propriety demands that the task of framing the full or actual Budget be left to the upcoming government.
When is the announcement of Interim Budget?
The interim budget is announced on 1 February 2019 around 11 am in the parliament.
